Assuming DKC never happened, but the Donkey Kong franchise still received a revival around the same time, what would the Donkey Kong series as a whole look like today?

Well, it kind of did get a revival at the same time, in DK94 for Game Boy. So still assuming DKC never happened, Donkey Kong would be a very closely Mario-adjacent puzzle-platformer with a lower profile, a Nintendo C- or D-lister rather than the B-lister it is. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if the MvDK series was all that happened, there was no Countries, 64, Konga, Jungle Beat, Paon games, or Returns. Just endless MvDK sequels and that's it. Junior would still be showing up in Mario sports games though.

Really? Hmm. I would have thought that at least DK would be showing up in more Mario stuff, since he'd be less disassociated with the series. Like, DK in at least cameo NPC roles in mainline Mario games and such.

When's the last time an established character or race that wasn't a Toad showed up in mainline Mario?? There's no way DK would be part of the cast in that way. We don't even get Wario showing up apart from the SM64DS anomaly. In this world DK would have less games and less prominence than Wario, and if we're talking about sports and Party, Junior is a more likely choice than Senior. Senior would also be played villainous more often.

It's been really close to happening a few times now actually. Party Monkies from Jungle Beat almost made it in as an NPC race in Mario Galaxy, for instance. Though I do generally agree with you, the prospects seem grim.
