Now that Piranha Plant and Joker have been announced, we might have a better idea of who could get in. We're down to the final three, who do you think is going to get the golden tickets?

*Final four; Piranha Plant's not part of the Fighters Pass, which is why he's free for the next couple months.
Not to jinx it, but I feel like Joker's inclusion (!) I've never even played a Persona game, but just by their pedigree alone, and Reggie's comments about how you can expect more character picks in a similar vein sets a strong precedent against choices like Edelgarde or a Gen VIII Pokemon (or, sadly, dear old Dixie) and for ones like Sora or Banjo... or, equally, Steve. We'll see how Nintendo and Microsoft weigh their love of dependable nerd-dollars against their desire to chase the potentially more lucrative field of kids-and-casual-gamer dollars. (Boy, remember when Minecraft was a torch carried almost exclusively by the adult, hardcore PC enthusiast crowd in almost exactly the same way Dwarf Fortress still is?) Waluigi's status as both a Nintendo character and a meme god makes him both kinds of character pick at once, but the way they've talked about him lately makes me think they were already internally committed to a different direction by the time the demand for him became apparent and don't see him as enough of a priority to make way for him. :/
But hey, fair enough if that is how things end up shaking out; a few days ago I would have told you that the Doom Slayer or Dragonborn were long shots despite what fitting, awesome choices they would be (Doomguy especially, given his storied history with Nintendo and archetype as a lightning-quick, projectile-based heavyweight character), Bethesda's desire to see one of their characters in Smash, and just how much I wanted to see them personally, but now it actually seems entirely possible. Fingers crossed...

At least we now know that third-party characters are still on the table. I thought the thread for Joker being in Smash was that Persona Q game, but with rumors that they're porting Persona 5 to the Switch it ties into the idea that the DLC characters will be adverts for new games or ports or at least relevant outside of Smash. My new forecast for DLC include Byleth (or Edelgard if they're daring to break the usual mold) from Fire Emblem: Three Houses and even possibly Slyux for Metroid Prime 4. What this means for Dixie, Rayman, or any other character in that vein, I have no idea. I do agree that spirits or lack of them don't mean anything, and I think this even extends to the Mii outfits that are already in the game as opposed to DLC costumes.
Assuming the presence of unused Rare spirits isn't either a fluke or a scrapped deal, there's still the chance of Minecraft and/or Banjo content being DLC, and it can still tie into being something "new". Suppose there's a N64 classic down the pipeline, and Nintendo opted to include Banjo-Kazooie after negotiating with Microsoft. What better way to advertise the thing than including a character well known from that era that isn't already represented?

OH yeah, I forgot all about those Rare spirits... unless that "leak" was also fake. Some of these trolls have gone to great lengths to fool the internet about Smash stuff this go-round

TCRF has them on its Ultimate page, and it seems like the sort of thing that's easy to indepedently confirm...

Wouldn't blame them.

Totally biased here but since I adored all 130 hours of Persona 5 last year during my huge playthrough I'm totally fine with Joker. Atlus wise there's not too much they can really use for a character with ties to Nintendo who'd still drum up excitement, though a Jack Frost assist would be fun.
DLC wise I feel he sets the stage for this being very third party focused like other's have said; I really want Banjo, and he may be along the lines of Joker in Nintendo eyes for a surprise (though it's still fully up to how much MS and Nintendo can play ball with each other), but Lloyd, a Dragon Quest rep, Rayman, Travis Touchdown... There's a lot more options who seem feasible now imo.

He doesn't usually seem to place that high on Smash wishlist polls, but even from the standpoint of someone who's never touched No More Heroes, Travis would seriously be way too perfect; given the sorts of picks Smash 4 made, I'm honestly kind of surprised he didn't make it into that game (just look at Shulk, after all).

I think all of the DLC will be serious third party characters.

Since Joker has actually been on a Nintendo system, and the Megami Tensei parent franchise originated in the 80s and has basically been on every Nintendo console & handheld, including the damn Virtual Boy, it's not really as out there as people are reacting.
I wonder what other third parties might be in...
Something from Rare makes a lot of sense, especially with all that dummy data in, so I wouldn't be surprised if Banjo showed up, though I'm not holding my breath. We already have a Sonic, and Shadow and Knuckles are assists, so if Sega fielded another rep it would probably be from another franchise. Though I guess Bayo already kind of counts there? Sort of? Wonder Boy would be cool, but I'm not sure how you'd do him justice. Or which Wonder Boy you'd go with, for that matter.
Crash and/or Spyro are heavy contenders, I would imagine.
Bomberman would seem like an obvious pick if he weren't already an AT.
What with Bethesda's newfound love of the Switch, I could see, like, Doomguy getting in.
Frogger would be neat.
Yeah idk heh

Supposedly before the Game Awards, somebody suggested the five DLC characters would be an Atlus Rep (claiming Joker), Sylux, Edelgard, a Microsoft rep (claiming Banjo), and a Square-Enix rep (either Crono or Neku).
This could be the Grinch leak all over again, but this is a pretty okay DLC lineup if true. Needs more Dixie though.

Joker as a character is only about as distant from Nintendo as Cloud (or at least he's as distant as Cloud was before FF7 was announced for Switch), but the Persona series is easily the most distant series to get a character in Super Smash Bros. It's only had a couple recent spinoffs on the 3DS. Even Metal Gear has at least had ports and remakes of main series games across multiple Nintendo consoles.
At this point I'd say it's more happenstance than anything that the third party characters still all have some ties to Nintendo. I don't think Sakurai is going out of his way to fact that aspect, all he cares about is whether or not they are a video game character.

I think people are forgetting that Persona is itself a part of the larger Megami Tensei franchise... which has games on damn near every system Nintendo has ever released, including the Virtual Boy of all things.

It's a spinoff series, so it's not really the same thing as the Shin Magami series. Not any more than DK and Wario are the same thing as the Mario series. And I'm sure Ultimate will list Joker's series as Persona, not as Shin Magami Tensei.

that's fair, but Jack Frost still appears in it as the Megami Tensei mascot. But I suppose that's like Moogles showing up in Kingdom Hearts at this point
