Really? Hmm. I would have thought that at least DK would be showing up in more Mario stuff, since he'd be less disassociated with the series. Like, DK in at least cameo NPC roles in mainline Mario games and such.

Assuming DKC never happened, but the Donkey Kong franchise still received a revival around the same time, what would the Donkey Kong series as a whole look like today?

There is a special place in my heart for this game. The Famicom Grand Prix series is basically the precursors to Mario Kart. Hell, the first title is basically top-down Mario Kart, with just Mario as the only character. The second title, dropping in 1988, switches to the familiar behind the car camera, but does things a little differently. It's a proper F1 cross-country race, none of this Nascar looping track stuff heheh. It had proper long long long tracks, you set pitstop points before the race began for where you could pull over to repair if need be, and there were branching pathways, so it was possible to get screwed out of your repair spot if the competition got nasty. And it was in 3D! You needed to wear red/blue glasses for it! Really ahead of its time.

The various tie-ins for the first AvP film, starting with a fighting game from 2004: Followed (also in 2004) by something in the style of the Alien 3 game on consoles (this one was actually a prequel to the film, featuring the events of 1904): 2004's Predator mobile titlem as a AvP tie in: A little out of sequence, an AvP rail shooter in 2006, based on the film: A 2007 sequel to 2004's Predator game, Predator: The Duel (both side scrolling & 3d versions): Good 2007 Requiem tie-in (better than the PSP game, IMO) SNES style Predators j2me title in 2010 (this is way more fun than it should be): The iOS Predators tie in, also 2010: and, from the same studio, 2013's AvP Evolution (you can get this one on Ouya!): I'm actually a little torn up that there weren't any Prometheus tie-ins, that I know of.

I'd like to see a return to the classic DK'94/MvsDK1 style of gameplay for one. It's a good template. I fear that Nintendo is too locked into their current franchise templates to contemplate making another one though. There's a good little indi game on mobile called Brave Bit that I think could serve as a good baseline. Here, let me dig up a video...
I think, reskinned as Mario vs DK, this could go over quite well!
I would also, now that digital slots are all the rage, love to see digital adaptions of the DK Fruit Machine and the two Jungle Beat medallion game sequels.

Fair enough. Doesn't even need to be with Rare, or MS. Hell, could just be making Congo Bongo a character in the next Monkey Ball.

Sega's actually had a pretyt long history with Microsoft. They helped build the original XBox for them, and it was supposed to be backwards compatible with the Dreamcast, but that fell through at some point. Part of the original contract is why Dreamcast games keep getting XBLA releases though, due to that partnership. Just as Sony built their first console with Nintendo and then branched, so too did MS do the same with Sega. And, as far as Microsoft is concerned, you have to admit that Rare is the quintessential animal mascot team, so it's not exactly the most out there choice. I mean, it could easily go to some other team, but Rare seem more of a fit, especially with the Donkey Kong history.

Personally, I think they should go back to their Microsoft partnership, and allow Rare the use of the IP. That way we can have a clear DK expy in Rare games, and they could even retcon Safari Sam to be Sabreman in his younger days. Like, Sabreman can't be his given name, right? Safari Sam, the Sabreman. Got a nice ring to it.

While proboards has built in mobile support, I just thought I'd share that I've done the setup for tapatalk integration, so the forum should be propagating into the app sometime in the next 24 hours!

I'd count Mario Tennis and Mario Kart, to an extent. The early ones anyway, that still featured Junior. It wasn't really till Gamecube that DKC stuff started showing up in the sports titles. I'd also accept Mario Clash, Wrecking Crew '98, and the like.
